Coming back home twice a year, Ion was leaving Romania smuggling anti communist pamphlets given to him by his high school teacher. At the first harbor, he mailed them to "Radio Free Europe" in Munich who read them on short waves that Romanians could hear when hiding in their kitchen. In 1988 his wife was casually interrogated by the "Securitate", the Romanian KGB. The warning was strong enough for Ion to decide to defect and never come back in his home country. To avoid defection, Ion did not have a passport but had a "seaman's book' as per the Geneva convention of 1958.
