Huber, I rode with Helge Pedersen from Shanghai to Muchich, so the reverse of your trip. I know all the difficulties you can run into in Russia. Police being the biggest. Winter ? We rode in May/June and it was cold. November ? You better get South, young man ! It is important to write so we can see that you are ok. Just a little note is ok. You can do the pictures later, when you have time.

Remember, Russian winters defeated Hitler and Napoleon, so its okay to hide a warm animal or electric vest under your coat to help stay warm! Don't forget to drink alot , dehydration sneaks up in cold weather.

Have a safe journey my friend. Mongolia is roughly between you and me at the moment. Oh how I would like to meet you there. There are many that visit Mongolia in the summer months but very few have experienced winter there. Their meals will probably be even more diverse designed to keep the cold at bay. I'm sure you will tell us. We look forward to hearing more about your daily travels.

I see the snow on the Ural Hubert, but in all honesty at the next creek you cross stop and wash a little dirt off that steed.
We can't having you crossing the border into Mongolia looking like a weary traveler from nowhere. On the other hand, don't get it so clean that you look like a newbie......Now what to do?
You say it is 2500 miles to go, at least now you will not have to stop every 30 miles and add a half quart of oil.
Does it run like new now and are you carrying a set of rings with you.
Looking foward to your next post...be safe.

The sidecar runs like a new and I have a spare set of piston rings with me.
Thank's a lot

When you travel through Bangkok, please give us a shout, you can stay with us and tell us all about your adventures.
I do have to retire and go back to the states in June 2010 though, so make it before then.

By the way, Ivan married that lovely woman Clara on 7 Oct 2009...finally!

You are my HERO! I am fasinated as to the year and set-up of the trike; is the air intake your own invention? Is the factory air intake not effective?
Thanks for a fascinating, vicarious experience. I have a 2008 Patrol, but I am still in the process of setting the bike up.

Hubert, the winter is not as bad as the Spring when everything melts and all you have is mud. Deep mud !. Dress warm, do not get wet, eat a lot of hot food and drink NO alcohol. Drink lots of hot tea. You bike will do just fine, it is made for this kind of terrain. You will do just fine, you were made to travel like this. Not to worry, each town has a house that will take you in in winter. Yes, you might have to sleep with some fleas but better that than freezing. A compost heap is a good, warm place to sleep in. Yes, you read right, dig a hole in a compost heat, wrap yourself in plastic and crawl in, it is warm. Bon Voyage, mon ami !

By the way, this Sunday in Los Angeles is the Griffith Park Sidecar Rally. There will be hundreds of sidecar rigs there.
Take Care,

Bonjour Hubert,

Will you take pictures of the disassembled engine. Is there any damage to the 650 pistons, to the lower cylinder? Was a piston ring coming completely out of the cylinder and wiping oil back into the chamber?

Yahoo! Hubert!
Glad to hear you are safe in Irbit. Post lots of pictures of the Irbit factory and your engine rebuild.
Cheers!

Hubert,
Jessica kept us all in line while you were out of contact. For her it was more like herding cats than anything else.
So happy you took the risk and made an adventure out of it.
I just knew that the Ural was going to arrive in Ibert on a flatbed truck...forgive me.

Wow, the hospitality and care shown by Ural is very warming. If I am ever in the market for a sidecar rig; Ural has my vote. Best regards, Chris, VA, USA
